Pebble mosaics are a flooring technique made from river or sea pebbles.

The word shingle refers to this type of art that peaked in the 19th century mainly in the Aegean area, creating works that are particularly characterized as ornaments of traditional architecture.

They started from the Minoan years, passed through the Hellenistic period as exquisite mosaics, went abroad during the Ottoman Empire and flourished again in the Aegean during the 19th century, in conditions of reconstruction of the new Greek state.
